War is bad for business. This has been a fact for any club, going back to horse and carriage. If youâre constantly watching your back and waiting enemies out, you arenât out on the streets hustling for uncs. Clippers become soldiers, handlers become lieutenants, and our directors become a council talking strategy. All the runners and representatives had to pick up a gun unless they got a pass from Maria, who was prone to oblige because of our limited numbers.
Wars put everyone in a difficult position, not just because of death but because of the vacuum they left in everything. Our partners would use other guilds and tempt junior members to make money off the books or leave us hanging. Keeping track of individuals whose loyalty was, at best, professional isnât possible when youâre too busy watching your back.
War was messy, war was hell, and as Maria had hinted, DPS let us shoot it out with little interference. Whatever she had on their director, captain, or commissioner, it seemed to be bulletproof, and that element at least wasnât a great concern as long as we kept things quiet.
Teresitaâs was now closed to the public for the time being. Wars were expensive for everyone, not just for the bosses like Maria, who had enough uncs to retire five times over. We kept shooters walking the strip, ready to hit anyone looking to rush us, and Tabbi Winter had drones in the air, scanning the area to warn us of incoming. This wasnât our first dance, and this was clear. Everyone was on their game, even setting up defenses around the bar and cells across Case City.
Me? I didnât have any talent for tinkering with drones. Maria wanted me to assist the directors, so I did. In the back of the bar, past the pool tables and arcade machines, was a small table in the corner with several chairs placed about it. I sat with Lobo Nieves, Lucky Liu, Tabitha Winter, and Jovan âGorillaâ Barber. All directors who came up through clipping, not robbing or dropping Bliss.
It wasnât that I looked down on selling drugs, but this was combat, and it made sense to have those of us present who knew it well. As far as manpower, we had twenty-five members ready to go, thirty representatives looking to earn a name, and countless runners willing to do whatever we told them. Even Miguel and Deon were present, ready to work, which surprised and impressed me since I doubted either had clipped a line under Lobo Nieves.
Jovan was a muscular, no-nonsense, older handler who, like Lucky, had a taste for the finer things. His nickname, âGorilla,â came from his imposing physique, but a brilliant criminal mastermind was beneath all that bulk and position. Tabitha, or âTabi,â as we knew her was a true believer just like the rest of us, even going so far as tattooing âSalazar Glitchâ below the hairline of her white cropped fade.
In terms of allies, no gangs and guilds wanted to get mixed up in our feud, but that didnât stop us from enlisting outside help.
